DAY TWO – THE NEW TOWN

BREAKFAST: BROUGHTON STREET DELI

Start your day the right way with a relaxed breakfast in the bright, airy comfort of the Broughton Street Deli. Using all fresh, local ingredients, their brunch and lunch menus serve up tasty, delicious, simple food at any time of the day. If you’re looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, we can’t recommend the pancakes enough – served up with berries, pear, pineapple and maple syrup, it’s a combination that was so brilliant, we’ll be trying it ourselves at home now too.

GO FOR A WANDER: BROUGHTON STREET

One of those trendy streets in a city that boasts everything you could possibly be looking for in one place: good food, great coffee, independent shops and more. Spiralling from York Place down to London Street, we recommend earmarking a few hours to go for a wander down here. Highlights include: Coco Chocolatier (for ethically traded, organic chocolate), Narcissus (for beautiful fresh flowers) and Curiouser and Curiouser for quirky, original gifts.

ASK THE EXPERTS: ARTISAN COFFEE

A dark, homely kind of place, Artisan Roast was the first speciality coffee shop and roaster in Scotland, very much sparking the Artisan coffee trend north of the border. With an extensive range of brewing techniques and staff who clearly know their fully washed from their natural coffee, they’ve mastered the type of coffee shop you could easily spend the whole day in, chatting to the staff, catching up with friends or getting your head down and getting work done.

A HEARTY SCOTTISH LUNCH AT THE DOGS

This place had us at hello. An unexpectedly charming, upstairs brasserie decked out in statues, photographs and paintings of dogs. Count us in. The menu champions Scottish and British ingredients, lots of small dishes with a hearty, traditional feel that promise to send you on your way feeling very full indeed (in a good way!). A bright, beautiful little place to stop and fill up in amongst all your exploring – plus it’s great value for money. (Read: more to spend on cake later!)

PICTURE PERFECT: PRINCES GARDENS

A garden worthy of a hundred photographs, this is one of our favourite spots in the entire city. A quaint, beautifully kept public space that starts in Princes Street and zigzags its way up to the castle, there isn’t a corner of it that isn’t picturesque. With access from Castlehill and the New Town, it makes for the perfect place to explore or to just stop and enjoy the view. There are no photographs that sum up what it feels like to turn a corner and see the castle there, towering above you. If you’re a keen photographer, then the lower gardens at the Princes Street side is one of the best spots to capture it in all its glory.

THE BEST VIEW: CALTON HILL

Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh’s real gems. Home to the National Monument, the famously unfinished Athenian acropolis (which is a lot of fun to attempt to climb) and Nelson’s Monument, it’s one of the city’s main hills and is very easy to access from the New Town. Brimming with locals who’re looking for a place to relax and tourists who’re there for the beautiful views across the Edinburgh skyline, you could easily spend hours up there, taking it all in.

REST YOUR HEAD: ROSE STREET APARTMENT

If you’re looking for somewhere central to stay and want to try somewhere a little bit different from one of the big hotels, we uncovered a little gem in the form of Rose Street Apartment. A hop, skip and a jump from Princes Street, this two bed, first floor flat has a unique traditional meets modern feel, complete with colourful touches throughout – notably the paintings of Edinburgh by local artists. After two long days of exploring the city, it’s a lovely little retreat to come back to for some peace and quiet.
