Every Cambridge Satchel begins in the workshop, not as a finished object, but as something carefully assembled by hand, step by step, by skilled artisans. It is a process defined by patience, precision, and pride. From the first cut of leather to the final stitch, each bag carries with it the rhythm of the people who made it and the quiet signature of their craft that continues long after it leaves the workshop.

Built by Hand

Every bag begins with time, time to cut, to stitch, to refine, and to finish. Nothing is rushed, because nothing here is ordinary.

“I think it is the time it takes to stitch the bags and the effort we put into making them,” says Henry. That time is visible in every detail, in the alignment of each seam, the tension of every stitch, and the careful repetition of a process perfected over years.

Craft here is not about speed, but about attention. About making something that holds its shape, its purpose, and its integrity over time.

A Workshop That Feels Like Family

Inside the workshop, making is shared. It is collective, familiar, and deeply connected, built on trust and long-standing relationships.

“Because we make all the bags here and we are quite a family, a lot of us have worked together for a long time, so we know each other so well and we have always really supported each other,” says Jo.

That sense of familiarity shapes the process. Each person understands not only their role, but the rhythm of those around them.

For Elliot, this shared pride is what defines the workshop: “It is the craftsmanship that goes into making our bags, we really take pride in everything we do here at Cambridge Satchel.”

Built to Be Recognised

There is a moment, often unexpected, when a Cambridge Satchel is recognised in the world. A shape, a detail, a presence that feels instantly familiar.

“When I’m out and about and I see somebody with a Cambridge Satchel, straight away I know it’s a Cambridge Satchel,” says Jo. “I say, oh is that a Cambridge Satchel bag you’ve got? Well… I work there; and I tell everybody.”

That recognition is shared by the makers themselves, a connection between what is created in the workshop and what is carried out into everyday life.

“When I see somebody using our leather bags, I feel very satisfied,” says Henry. “Seeing some of the work we’ve done, it makes you proud.”

And that pride grows with time. “You always get a sense of pride, especially when it’s a bag that is 10–15 years old still going really, really strong,” says Elliot. “I always try to go over and say to people, ‘by the way, I work for Cambridge Satchel, I probably made that bag.”
