Things We Love

Behind the Scenes at CSC: Introducing our ‘Blogger in Residence’

Here at The Cambridge Satchel Company, we like to do things a little differently. From the way we first started (on our Founder, Julie Deane’s, kitchen table all those years ago), to how we operate day-to-day, we prefer to favour the personal over the corporate. That’s why we never use big branding agencies (everything we do is still done in-house), outsource the manufacturing of our traditionally British bags overseas (all our bags are still handmade on British soil, either at our factory in Leicestershire or by other British manufacturers we’ve worked with since the beginning), or use models in our campaigns (we always use our friends, family, and colleagues – so everyone you see in our photos is someone we know), to name just a few examples.

We were one of the first brands to embrace bloggers and social media. Right from the beginning, Julie started to drive awareness and interest in the brand by reaching out to bloggers; back in 2008, this wasn’t an approach adopted by many brands, but we saw the early merits of taking this approach (and it worked for us). Coupled with the fact that we chose to launch online rather than with ‘bricks and mortar’ stores (those came later!), the importance of digital, and the need for that to be at the core of all our brand communications, has always been one of our driving strategies.

As that need only increases, we’ve taken the step of hiring our own in-house influencer to work with us on our digital and social media communications. Why hire a faceless agency to advise on digital strategy when you can go straight to the source and work with someone who already perfectly understands and embodies the brand? So we’re thrilled to welcome Briony Whitehouse (you might know her as @agirlastyle) as our new ‘Blogger in Residence’.

Briony was one of the earliest lifestyle bloggers in the UK; establishing her award-winning blog ‘A Girl, A Style’ back in 2009. Alongside her blog, she’s spent the past 15 years working as a political advisor and communications strategist, so we feel lucky to have someone with such a wealth of experience – both on and offline. More importantly, we’ve been friends from the beginning; Julie and Briony – a fellow Cambridge girl – actually first met when Briony was working in Parliament and Julie was just starting out, and the two hit it off right away – bonding over their shared love of books, dogs, and Cambridge. and Briony has been a friend ever since.

You might already recognise Briony as a long-time friend of the brand and will have already seen her influence across our social media channels, but we’re excited to be working together on many innovative, creative and fun things together going forward – particularly as we head into our 10th anniversary next year!
