Bank holiday weekends were made for day trips and exploring new places – just one extra day makes such a difference!

Whenever we go to a new city for the day/weekend, we always make a bucket list of the things we want to do while we’re there. Our categories are normally along the lines of: something cultural, something that involves cake and something a bit silly.

In case you find yourself out and about this weekend near one of our stores, we’ve listed a few things you should try to do while you’re there: our CSC bucket list, if you like, for each location.

Grab a pen, take note and get ready to make some plans.

London, Sky Garden

A bird’s eye view of London and a beautiful garden spread over three floors where you can sit, relax and take it all in. The observation deck is the best spot for photos!

Sky Garden, Frenchurch Street, London

Edinburgh, Arthur’s Seat

The main peak of a group of hills in Edinburgh and one of the most photographic parts of the city. The best views are to the west overlooking Edinburgh Castle, Old Town and the New Town. It doesn’t take long to get to the top and the views make it all worthwhile. Film fanatics will recognise this spot from the opening scene of Chariots of Fire and more recently from One Day (based on the bestselling novel by David Nicholls).

Cambridge, The Varsity Hotel Rooftop Bar

Overlooking the River Cam, this rooftop bar is situated above one of the loveliest hotels in Cambridge, The Varsity. A stone’s throw from the river, we had our summer party here last year and we have great memories of watching the sun go down on our favourite city in the world. It’s one of the best spots for nailing one of those iconic Cambridge rooftop photographs.

Cambridge, Punting down the River Cam

There’s a reason why people say no trip to Cambridge is complete without a punt down the River Cam. It’s a lovely thing to do at any time of year but even more so in the summer months. You can opt for a chauffeured tour or you can hire a boat yourself. If you do the latter, we highly recommend packing a picnic and taking your favourite book and docking further down the river to make the most of the sunshine.

Edinburgh, The Potter Trail

It’s no secret that everyone at CSC is a BIG fan of Harry Potter. So when we heard there was a tour of the locations in Edinburgh that inspired some of our favourite characters and places from the books we could hardly contain ourselves! The tour covers the cafe where Rowling wrote the first book and the graveyard that inspired the character of Voldemort. Plus it’s a great way to uncover hidden parts of the city.

 Brighton, Volks Electric Railway

One of Brighton’s many hidden gems and a great way to see more of the town. Built in 1883, the Volks is the world’s oldest operating railway and runs along the seafront from the Palace Pier to the Black Rock.

Edinburgh, Mary’s Milk Bar

A few minutes away from our new store in the Grassmarket, as neighbours go, they don’t get much better than Mary’s Milk Bar. Best known for her gelato and malted milkshakes, this is the perfect place for a pit stop in amongst shopping and sightseeing (but if you’re in a rush, you can also take everything to go). If you’re interested in learning a bit more about the inspiration behind all the flavours and how gelato is made, you can book a place on Mary’s Sundae School too.

Cambridge, Fitzbillies for Chelsea Buns

Don’t even think about leaving Cambridge without a trip to Fitzbillies. A beautiful tea room and bakery, the main attraction is the Chelsea Buns. Best enjoyed with a cup of tea and a banana on the side, we’ve never before tasted such sticky, cinnamon goodness. A Cambridge institution, the old-fashioned bakery has been selling its famous sticky buns on Trumpington Street since 1921. Don’t miss out (take a box home with you too).

London, Crumbs & Doilies

Tucked away in a secret corner just off Carnaby Street, we’re going to make a big claim and say that these cupcakes are as good as the ones from the Magnolia Bakery in New York. Freshly baked in store and hand iced, we struggled to pick just one, they all looked so perfect… plus there’s gluten free options too. An ideal sugar-rush to give you more energy to shop!

Brighton, JB’s Diner

Situated on the seafront overlooking the pier, this all American diner doesn’t look much from the outside but wait until you step inside the door! The decor is wonderfully eccentric with walls made up of american memorabilia, neon signs and other unidentified objects – they were also showing Tom and Jerry on the TVs while we were eating (which can never be a bad thing). The menu is packed full of every burger combination you can imagine but the real highlight was the milkshakes… they taste as good as they look!

London, Rockadollar

Everyone is talking about the new hot dog joint in Soho. But these aren’t just any sausages in a bun. Started by Richard Standford (head chef at the Hawksmoor Knightsbridge), these are the Creme de la Creme of hot dogs. With five great options to choose from, the menu is small but very well considered – plus we heard all dogs are cooked over charcoal and oak wood and they steam the buns for a sweet taste! We’ll see you at the front of the queue!

Cambridge, The Pint Shop

Inspired by British Beer Houses of the 1830s, this pub/restaurant is one of Cambridge’s best eating places. The vibe is very relaxed and the food is hearty and traditional but with a modern, unexpected twist to each dish (which we love!). The pudding menu is a real highlight with the Banana Split Sundae and Butterscotch Pudding in the race for our favourite.

Have a lovely weekend whatever you get up to! If you find ourselves in any of the places we mentioned above, don’t forget to pop in and visit us in store!
