Our Founder Julie Chats About Our New Cambridge University Collaboration.

Our Founder Julie Chats About Our New Cambridge University Collaboration.

It’s almost impossible to talk about our hometown of Cambridge without referencing the University. Spend more than a few minutes in the city and you’ll already have noticed the grand, historic buildings, the students cycling past on the cobbled streets and the sense of calm that can only come where pupils are busy learning. It makes Cambridge magical; a place like no other. Our Founder, Julie, felt so at home here that she never really left after she graduated.

Julie studied Natural Sciences at Gonville & Caius College, arriving just five years after women were first admitted to the College, and graduated in 1987. She joined Deloitte and qualified as a Chartered Accountant but soon returned to her College where she was the first Fellow for Development and the Registrary – the first woman to be appointed to this role in the 650-year history of the college. Julie’s life has been so linked to Gonville & Caius College that just last month Julie was elected Honorary Fellow of the College, a rare accolade that serves to reinforce the influence of the College on Julie, and her on it.

So important is Cambridge University to The Cambridge Satchel Company that we have collaborated on a range of products for the last few years, with profits from these products going to the development of the University. This summer we are adding to the collection with a range of new small accessories and a new look range of satchels and bags.

Julie tells us a little more about what the University means to her and what you can expect from the collaboration:

“The launch of the new Cambridge University collection is a high point in the calendar as it underlines yet again my connection and commitment to it. As a student the application needs to be to a college rather than to the University directly and there the dilemma begins. I chose Gonville and Caius, one of the oldest and most traditional and I have never regretted my choice. Caius became my home as an undergraduate and I returned years later as a Fellow and Registrary – although I resigned my Fellowship when Emily was born in 1999 I was never out of touch and then the most exciting news arrived a few months ago – I had been elected an Honorary Fellow and so once again my association is official. If you come to Cambridge do visit Caius – it has produced thirteen Nobel Prize winners and counts Stephen Hawking among its current Fellows. Supporting Cambridge University through this collection ties both my worlds together and I hope you will feel like joining in the spirit of this collaboration.

This new collection is even stronger than ever. The styling is confident and the lines are clean. The bags are stylish and worthy of bearing the name and symbol of Cambridge University.”
