Downing Street And The Inspiration Behind Our New-Season Collection

Downing Street And The Inspiration Behind Our New-Season Collection

Here in England, we may be clinging to the last glorious days of summer, but a new season is merely around the corner. Just this week we’ve spotted the first of the fallen autumn leaves, pulled out a sweater for the first time since spring, and started longing for cosy evenings indoors with a stack of books and a pot of tea.

Just as a new season evokes new traditions and moods, so too does it inspire us to create new collections in a rainbow of colours which reflect the changes around us. As ever, nature is the primary inspiration for our seasonal colours – from the changes in our Founder Julie Deane’s garden to the evolving scenery around her as she travels around Cambridge and the world.

Our latest collection for autumn is no different.

One day last autumn, Julie was visiting No. 10 Downing Street for a meeting. It is worth noting here what a special place Downing Street – the Prime Minister’s Westminster office and residence – is for both Julie and The Cambridge Satchel Company’s story. She was first invited to visit with her mother, Freda, for a reception honouring the winners of the Red Magazine Red Hot Women Awards in 2012 (where she was the recipient of the Start-Up award), and has since visited many times following her appointment by then UK Prime Minister David Cameron to conduct a review of self employment in the UK, and to support the GREAT Britain campaign with which she is involved.

“No matter how many times you walk down that street, it’s always a unique and incredible feeling,” says Julie of Downing Street. But on that particular day, she was so struck by the sight of the golden light streaming through the autumn leaves that she paused to snap a photo of the scene on her phone.

Julie's photograph. For Julie, that photo was symbolic of so many feelings of significance – the importance of Julie’s relationship to Downing Street, the changing of the seasons, and all the feelings autumn evokes – that it served as the inspiration for our new season colours.

The new season collection – in rich hues of Mustard, Racing Green, Brandy, Crimson, and Putty – reflect the changing season. The collection references that scene in Downing Street, as well as drawing inspiration from all the scholarly traditions and colours of autumn in Cambridge and New England – the falling of the golden leaves in the college quads, the sight of green bikes racing down the cobbled streets to get to lecture, the leather-bound books in the library, ivy-covered walls that turn crimson come-October, and start of term feasts.

We hope you’re as inspired by the new season and our latest collection as we are.
