Yes it’s the time for reflections and resolutions – what use is reflection if not to figure out a better way forward? 2016 saw us launch our mega bag, The Poppy – it’s been a massive hit but that came as no surprise as the team had all experienced that moment of falling in love when we first showed Poppy around. Celebrities and press embraced the new shape and the reaction in the shops has been fantastic. Developing new product is one of my favourite parts of my role, breathing new life into traditional bags that should never have been forgotten is core to our development.
Back to basics was another core theme, a slightly boring and overused phrase but there was a point last year when I felt we had forgotten the beauty of simplicity – we had been overthinking many things – shop window design for example. Our best Christmas windows came as a result of remembering that all we try to do is to create a sense of welcome and beauty and so our windows were brought to life with hazel twigs and warm white lights, framing the shop interiors. I felt they were perfect and a return to the spirit of Cambridge Satchel.
The Cambridge shop relocated just over a year ago – we are now between the market and Kings Parade, a fantastic location and we couldn’t be happier. Covent Garden is definitely our flagship but Cambridge is home and has played host to many customer events this year, usually with tea and Chelsea Buns from Fitzbillies. Next year we will roll out these events to all stores, an example of always striving to be a better version of ourselves. We now have shops in Covent Garden (London), Seven Dials (London), Cambridge, Brighton and Edinburgh – do come for a visit!
We had some fantastic projects in 2016 – from making small leather goods for The rolling stones exhibition. to creating satchels with a map of the London Underground on for The London Transport Museum. We launched ourcanvas bag collection and had too much fun with Melissa who masterminded our bubblegum-smelling, moulded, rubber satchels.
Our resolution for 2017 is to be better, to continue to do things differently and to keep things simple. Surround yourself with people that make you laugh and people that inspire you – that’s what we’ve done for 2017 and I hope you’ll love the results.
